The Java Slime Chunk PRNG Formula
In Java Edition, each chunk is tested by a deterministic pseudo-random formula that combines the world seed with the chunk coordinates. Each chunk has a 10% chance of qualifying, so a small area can contain more or fewer than one slime chunk in ten.
This calculation has remained identical across every Java Edition release since beta. Upgrading world versions does not change existing slime chunk coordinates, making slime platform layouts permanent across Minecraft updates.
Slime Spawning Criteria Below Y=40
- Depth Threshold: Slimes in slime chunks only spawn below Y=40, regardless of surface biome or sky access.
- Light Independence: Unlike standard hostile mobs, slimes in slime chunks can spawn at any light level. Lighting up your spawning platforms prevents creepers, skeletons, and zombies from spawning while letting slimes spawn freely.
- Clearance Space: Slimes require a solid, opaque floor block and a clear vertical space of at least 2.1 blocks (ideally 3 full blocks) to allow Big and Medium slimes to spawn.
- Player Distance Sphere: Slimes will not spawn within 24 blocks of a player, and they immediately despawn if located farther than 128 blocks away.
The 128-Block Cave Lighting Rule (Mob Cap Trap)
Natural slimes compete with other hostile mobs for spawning capacity. In a typical singleplayer Java world the hostile-mob cap is 70, although multiplayer and server settings change the practical result. Lighting or spawn-proofing nearby caves can improve rates; you do not need to clear an entire 128-block sphere before testing a farm.
Slime Chunks vs Swamp Spawning Differences
In Swamps and Mangrove Swamps, slimes generate on the surface between Y=50 and Y=70 only at night with light level 7 or less. Swamp slime spawn rates fluctuate directly with the lunar cycle, peaking during full moons and dropping to zero during new moons. In contrast, slime chunks below Y=40 are completely unaffected by moon phases and work 24/7.
Automated Luring with Iron Golems
Slimes target nearby Iron Golems, so a protected golem can lure them toward a water channel or killing chamber. Test sight lines and pathing in your version; removing slimes promptly frees spawning capacity but does not guarantee an immediate replacement spawn.
Slime chunk FAQ
- Do torches or light sources stop slimes from spawning in slime chunks?
- No. Below Y=40 in a slime chunk, slimes can spawn in full brightness (light level 15). Keeping platforms brightly lit is the standard way to prevent other hostile mobs from spawning.
- Can slimes spawn on bottom slabs, glass, or carpets?
- No. Slimes require solid, full opaque blocks to spawn. Transparent blocks, bottom slabs, glass, and buttons prevent all slime spawns.
- Where should I stand to AFK at my slime farm?
- Position your AFK platform roughly 25 to 30 blocks away horizontally or vertically from the spawning floors. Standing closer than 24 blocks blocks spawns, while standing farther than 128 blocks despawns slimes instantly.
