Monster Room Generation & Placement Attempts
Minecraft dungeons (monster rooms) are small subterranean cobblestone and mossy cobblestone chambers centered around a mob spawner with 0 to 2 loot chests. This scanner plots candidate positions for Java Edition seeds.
For Java 1.18+, generation makes 10 upper monster-room attempts at Y=0–319 and 4 deep attempts at Y=-58–-1 per chunk. An attempt still needs suitable floor, ceiling, and wall openings, so this lightweight browser scan reports candidates rather than guaranteed rooms.
Spawner Activation & Local Mob Cap Rules
- 16-Block Player Activation Radius: A mob spawner cage only spins and spawns monsters when a player is within 16 blocks (spherical distance). Beyond 16 blocks, the spawner immediately becomes idle.
- 9×9×9 Area Mob Cap Check: The spawner checks a 9×9×9 block volume centered on itself before each spawn cycle. If 6 or more mobs of its type are detected inside that box, spawning pauses until mobs leave or are killed.
- Water Chute Flushing: To achieve continuous maximum spawn rates, design water streams along the dungeon floor that push newly spawned mobs at least 9 blocks away from the spawner cage immediately.
- Double Spawner Clustering: One player must be within 16 blocks of both cages. A center-to-center distance around 32 blocks is the geometric limit, and a smaller separation leaves useful room for an AFK position and farm layout.
Spawner Mob Odds & Strategic Value
When a dungeon location successfully generates, Minecraft assigns the spawner mob using fixed weightings: Zombie spawners are chosen 50% of the time, while Skeleton and Spider spawners each have a 25% chance. Skeleton spawners offer the highest survival utility, providing infinite arrows, bows, and bone meal for automated crop farms. Cave spider spawners in abandoned mineshafts and Blaze spawners in Nether fortresses generate during separate structure passes.
Subterranean Depth & Cave Intersections
The Java 1.18+ candidate scan covers two configured ranges: Y=0–319 for the upper feature and Y=-58–-1 for the deep feature. Terrain validation determines which candidates become real rooms, so confirm the displayed Y coordinate in a fresh world before planning a farm.
Safe Excavation & Lighting Requirements
Light the chamber before building. Four torches on the cage are a useful starting pattern, but room shape and spawn positions vary, so watch the cage and add lighting where needed instead of assuming one layout always disables every attempt.
Dungeon & spawner FAQ
- Can mob spawners be moved with Silk Touch or Pistons?
- No. In Java Edition, mob spawners cannot be collected with Silk Touch, and attempting to push them with pistons will fail or destroy the block. They drop only experience points when mined.
- Why did a marked dungeon candidate not appear in game?
- Dungeon placement checks require solid ceilings, solid floors, and 1 to 5 openings into adjacent cave air. If a cave carver or aquifer interrupts those blocks, the attempt aborts in worldgen.
- How close must two spawners be for a double XP farm?
- You need an AFK point within 16 blocks of both cages. About 32 blocks center to center is the theoretical limit, but a smaller separation is easier to activate reliably and build around.
